Musée de la Mer

Off the coast of Cannes, on the first of the Iles Lérins, the Musée de la Mer is located in the oldest part of the Fort Royal on Sainte Marguerite, classed as an historic monument, overlooking the sea and bordering the pine and eucalyptus forests. On the ground floor, the State prisons and the cell of the man in the iron mask where the mysterious prisoner was imprisoned for eleven years ; the Huguenot memorial and the wall paintings created by Jean Le Gac on the subject of the prisoner painter. In the roman water tanks and on the first floor, underwater archaeological materials from the Roman and Saracen wrecks of the Tradelière and Batéguier (ceramics, cargos of amphorae, glasses, etc.). Presentation of fragments of Roman wall paintings from the ground excavations at Ile Sainte-Marguerite and reconstruction of the laconicum. A space dedicated to temporary photographic exhibitions opens out onto a vast terrace overlooking the sea opposite the Cannes coastline, the Southern Alps, Cap d’Antibes and the Estérel.
